1st Annual Del Norte Boot, Scoot, And Boogie
June 13-16, 2024
Join us for the most unusual adventure race in the world! Boot up for an Alpine Giant Slalom Race, scoot across the San Luis Valley on your gravel bike, and boogie down the tallest sand dune in North America - 741’ tall Star Dune on a prototype Sand Boogie Board. The race will be a two day stage style race with an evening spent in historic downtown Del Norte, Colorado. Do you have what it takes to cross the finish line?
Day one will start with the slalom race, followed by a 71-mile gravel race from Wolf Creek to downtown Del Norte where we will spend the evening at the historic Windsor Hotel, one of the oldest in Colorado! We will gather at the Three Barrel Brewing Company for dinner and an opportunity to meet your fellow competitors. The evening will finish with line dancing in the Windsor’s turn-of-the-century parlor.
Day two we will depart Del Norte for a 96 mile ride to the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Our route will go through the Monte Vista National WIldlife Refuge, and will follow sections of the historic Los Caminos Antiguos Scenic and Historic Byway in the Sangre De Cristo National Heritage area.
Aid stations will be placed at sites of historic and cultural interest. Before riders can leave the aid station, they will take fun quizes about the area.
Registration fees will be waived for participants of Native American descent. Here at the Del Norte Project we celebrate the long history of Paleo-Indians through the modern Ute Tribe. We aim to increase Diversity and Inclusion in the sport of adventure racing.
Here is the proposed Scoot portion of the event. We will be pre-riding the course later this summer and adjusting the route slightly. Stay Tuned!

“The San Luis Valley is an expansive and unique gravel bike destination that provides sustenance to any cyclist’s appetite for adventure. Extending nearly 8,000 square miles, averaging 7,262 ft of elevation, and receiving less than 10 inches of rain a year makes it the largest high-altitude desert in all of North America. The San Luis Valley encompasses six counties, including Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Rio Grande, and Saguache, and has a relatively low population size.” [4]
“I usually judge an adventure ride by the amount of hike-a-bike involved. This race has a timed 741’ hike-a-bike up Star Dune….Sign me up!” - Matt Kuhn bikepacking legend and SandBOOGIE pioneer.
